Whitminster

off Whitminster Lane, Whitminster GL2 7PN

St. Andrew's Church is the parish church for the village of Whitminster. Set in a scenic grove surrounded by open countryside, it is located on the outskirts of the village in Wheatenhurst.

Although the church is normally locked, you can contact one the churchwardens who will do their best to come and open it for you.

There is a Public Right of Way from the main road to the church, through the Churchyard past the tower, along the wall and over the drive. Vehicle access to the Church is along the gravel drive, by courtesy of Whitminster House, with parking on the hard standing area in front of the church. No parking or driving on the grass is permitted.

History

The church site dates from 1086, although no part of the surviving fabric is visibly older than the 14th century. It was enlarged in 1842 to include a north aisle, designed by Bristol architect Thomas Foster, the tower was restored in 1844 and various other areas in 1884 by Sir A.W. Blomfeld, with the externals remaining mostly unchanged from that date. It currently has a peal of 6 bells, the earliest of which dates from 1634. It is one of only a few churches in Gloucestershire to retain a traditional Stoup, a stone basin used to hold Holy Water.
